Mission Essay
Apollo 11 was the first manned-landing on the moon. The mission took place from July 16, 1969, to July 24th, 1969. The people who went to the moon where astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and command module pilot Michael Collins. The rocket that launched them up to the moon is named “Saturn V”, which was a 363 ft tall rocket. The Saturn V launched from Cape Canaveral on July 16th, 1969, carrying all 3 crew members. Four hours and 40 minutes into the flight, the S-IVB stage separated and ejected into heliocentric orbit. After that happened, it was a wait of 4 days until they would land on the moon.
On July 20th, 1969, The Eagle landed on Sea of Tranquility, on the moon. Neil and Edwin rested in the Eagle for 4 hour. Then they started preparing for the first steps on the moon. Armstrong got the TV camera ready, than he took the first step on the moon. “…One step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”, that’s what Armstrong said while 530 million people watched on their television. After about 2 hours, after talking to President Nixon, and after doing a couple of experiments, Armstrong and Aldrin walked back into the Eagle. The total time they spent on the moon’s surface was 21 hours and 36 seconds.
On July 21rst, Trans-Earth injection of the CSM began on July 21rst when the SPS fired for two and a half minutes. When the Columbia went through orbit, the parachutes deployed, and the Columbia space craft splashed down into the Pacific Ocean, and the USS Hornet ship took them home. The flight back to earth took 195 hours, and 18 minutes, on July 24th, 1969.
One of the most challenging parts of the Apollo 11 mission was landing the Eagle. The Eagle had 30 seconds of fuel left when the 3 crew members landed it, but it was pulled off. “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.”
